A Prayer for Priests

Eternal God, please bless our priests, who represent you on this earth.

Make them more greatly aware of the grace that you pour out through them when they minister the sacraments, and help them to fall more deeply in love with You after each and every Mass that they celebrate. Please strengthen our priests, who shepherd Your flock, when they are in doubt of their faith, that they may be examples of Your truth and guide us always on the path to You.

We ask these things of You our Eternal Priest.
Amen.

What is the Sacrament of Holy Orders?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (# 1547) has this to say about Holy Orders:

"The ministerial or hierarchical priesthood of bishops and priests, and the common priesthood of all the faithful participate, “each in its own proper way, in the one priesthood of Christ.” While being “ordered one to another,” they differ essentially. In what sense? While the common priesthood of the faithful is exercised by the unfolding of baptismal grace—a life of faith, hope, and charity, a life according to the Spirit—, the ministerial priesthood is at the service of the common priesthood. It is directed at the unfolding of the baptismal grace of all Christians. The ministerial priesthood is a means by which Christ unceasingly builds up and leads his Church. For this reason it is transmitted by its own sacrament, the sacrament of Holy Orders."

Ordination to the ministerial priesthood is never simply a sacrament for the individual. Rather it is a sacrament for the whole church, lived and conducted within the Christian community, for the sake of the Christian community and always at the service of the Christian community.

Holy Orders calls men to come forth from within the  priestly people of the Christian community, and the new  priest takes up his ordained ministry for the Church on behalf of Christ, done with a priestly people.

Thinking about Priesthood?

A priest's life is essentially one of prayer and service.  He prays so that he can joyfully serve others. He serves so that God may work through him to assist God's people.
